Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment using new affixes. They can also improve its base stats or add additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

There are three types of universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding an Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph with a different one the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of inscriptions which can be freely swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded as many times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of those items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.
If an item is leveled out, it will be able to receive a new set of upgrade components, and an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Power and it is reset to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
After a piece has been upgraded to its maximum level, it will be able to receive an affix to increase its capabilities. The number of affixes that are available will depend on the item's class. For instance an uncommon or unique weapon with a standard base will only have two affixes, whereas a legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade process requires a specific number of Flightstones or Crests, depending on the type of item at its current level and in what slot it is located in. Weapons typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.
If an item is not able to reach its max level the NPC will offer players the option to transfer it to another person and then re-infuse the item with a different set of upgrades. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of material however it will result in less chance of success.
To measure the height of a structure, engineers will use an instrument to compare the measurement with an established reference point, such as a benchmark or the ground's elevation. This method is known as a "level loop." It involves taking readings with the backsight rod and level before turning the level to make the foresight rod reading. Rerolling
